It was HOT yesterday (Saturday June 13th) with a lovely 90 degree day. Nonetheless, we headed over to my favorite arena for the last barrel show I’ll be able to do until August (darn you, Saturday hours!). It actually turned out to be a great day- since there weren’t as many people competing as usual we were only there for three hours.
The first thing we did was lope through poles. I like to do this from time to time to keep her on her toes and her mind sharp. She was definitely really excited to run and she got a little ahead of herself. She almost missed a pole, but other than that she was very responsive. I’ve never actually trained her on poles, but she still loped a 29 second run.

For our exhibition, Fancy ran amazing with a 16.6! She tried to turn too early on third, but she listened to me and got around it really well.

Needless to say, after our exhibition Fancy was soaked with sweat. I had bottled some water from the farm to bring with us, but even when I presented her with it, she didn’t want to drink it. She never wants to drink when she’s working. She didn’t seem to really be bothered by the heat, so I just let her chill for a few minutes. Our open run came up quickly, and by then, she had dried off a bit.
I went into the open without pushing her too much since it was so hot. She’s really starting to get better about spinning right around that first barrel! All three turns were fairly tight and it was overall a great run. Even without pushing her, she still ran a 17.495!

Overall, I placed 4th in the 1D and was just barely too fast to have won the 2D. I was so proud of Fancy for beating the heat and giving it her all! As always, Fancy was such a good girl and so easy to work with. I’m so lucky to have such an incredible horse. I love how when we go into our runs now I don’t feel nervous, I just focus and put all my trust in Fancy. She hasn’t steered me wrong yet! I may work on bringing her back down to some slow work the next time we exhibition there, since she seems to only want to go fast nowadays. I don’t want her to get too hot! Our next show is in July, and it’s… a pleasure show! I thought it would be a nice change of pace. Can’t wait to share the experience!
