Knowing Cain is an experienced trail horse, I was so excited to get him out for the first time with me! We loaded up and made our way over to a friend’s property for a short trail ride.

We rode around the farm mostly, including through woods and fields, and nothing phased him. The only rough part of the ride was when he decided to jump a small muddy valley between two hills, but that’s just because I never learned any jumping and I was caught off guard! He was so well behaved, though, and definitely was taking care of me for the whole ride.

We rode across the road to the deepest part of the creek, which is a small area just deep enough that a 15 hand horse like Cain would have to swim a couple steps. The entry to the water had been washed out by a storm a couple days previous, but he didn’t hesitate to carefully slide on into the water.

He was an old pro and seemed to really enjoy going for a swim! I wasn’t sure how getting out of the water would go, since there was a little cliff back up. But, while I was trying to figure out the best way out, Cain already had gently leaped out of the water and firmly on the grass. I’m sure my face was hilarious – once again, caught off guard, but he’s the pro and I’m just along for the ride! I asked him into a lope up the hill back to the barn (something I’ve done with Fancy a million times), and let him gain speed as he went. He’s just like Fancy – he’ll go what speed you ask, but if you loosen your reins, you’re going for a ride! I love my horses to have a motor, and I’m glad to see he’s following in Fancy’s footsteps.

All in all, it was a beautiful, relaxing, and super enjoyable ride! I can’t wait to get him out again soon!
