Winter in One Day

We’ve had a decent first winter at our little farm so far – it was above freezing most of the time and we even had a few days in the 60s. But we couldn’t get away that easy! Basically, we had winter all in one day.

It started snowing on January 22nd – by bed time (which is fairly early for me) there was maybe around six inches on the ground. I threw some hay in to the lean to for the ponies, moved their water next to the lean to for easy access, and fell asleep. I was in for a surprise when I woke up… There was already nineteen inches of snow! Of course I immediately ran out to check on the horses- you could just see how happy they were with their icicles hanging off their blankets and partially frozen manes. Luckily, the blankets I had were working well and they weren’t wet at all underneath. As the day went on the snow continued to come down – and down, and down. The day consisted of running out to the lean to and throwing hay for the horses, and making sure they stayed under cover as much as possible. My wonderful boyfriend spent most of the day on the tractor clearing the snow from the driveway and making paths for me to the horses. By the end of the evening, there was THIRTY NINE INCHES of snow!

He's the best!

I took the camera out the next morning briefly to assess the damage. I was only outside for about fifteen minutes to feed, throw hay for each horse, check the water (hooray for water heaters!),  make sure everyone was happy and healthy, and then take pictures. I’m only 5’2, so having over three feet of snow was a little rough on me!

Without further ado, enjoy!

The day of the storm. The view out the back door – you could barely see the horses through the heavy snow fall.
The day after the storm. Scotch tried to go to her normal spot for feed, and the snow’s up to her chest!
The day after the storm. Comet was happy to be out without the snow falling!
The day after the storm. The horses made a few paths around the hay feeder and dug it out themselves.
The day after the storm. Shadow was happy my boyfriend plowed some paths for us!
The day after the storm. My beauties posed for me!
Our road - maybe we'll be out by Spring?
